Canadian Geographic Education’s vibrant and colourful Giant Floor Maps are unlike any other educational resource in the country. These maps offer students an opportunity to discover and explore the diverse aspects of geography in unique and interactive ways that accommodate various learning styles. The Giant Floor Map program is a free resource offered to Canadian teachers for kindergarten to Grade 12.
Made of durable vinyl and measuring 11 metres by 8 metres (35 feet by 26 feet), a Giant Floor Map is roughly half the size of a school’s gymnasium. Each map is packed inside its own individual bag and has additional supplies to further enhance students’ learning, including a map legend, a teacher’s guide with curriculum-linked activities, and props to help bring the map to life.
The teacher’s guide and learning activities that accompany the maps have been created by certified Canadian educators. Each map has a theme that is explored in the guide, which provides background information and inquiry ideas. The guide helps teachers to introduce each topic and dive deeper into the subject matter as a way to nurture and develop geographic literacy among their students.
